Dear Tom:

Thank you for the information you sent me on St. Gianna Physician's Guild and the work you are doing to encourage participation by physicians and others in the health care profession. This follows my conviction that our challenge in faith is the evangelization of cultures which, of course, was the thinking of Pope John Paul II. The Southern Cross feature on the Guild and what you are doing demonstrates that you are taking seriously the vocation of the laity as articulated by the Second Vatican Council, namely, "to engage in temporal affairs and to order them according to the plan of God."

I regret that the absence of a helping auxiliary bishop will not allow me the time to meet with you to learn even more about your mission, but I am confident that you are being energized by the Spirit and following the Spirit's lead.
